Since way back in 1959, Caravella Restaurant, the first Michelin star in southern Italy, has been a must-visit culinary stop on the Amalfi Coast.
It is with these words that Chef Antonio talks about his art: “Simplicity is the most difficult goal to achieve in the kitchen. Every detail tells the story of our continuous research, the story of my Family, custodian of the great culinary tradition of our Coast, with so much attention to our Customer so that they can feel at home“.
The restaurant is located in the heart of the historic center at the 12th-century ducal palace of the Dukes of Amalfi, the Piccolomini. The Restaurant, thanks to numerous restoration works such as the renovation of the frescoed ceilings whose restoration took nearly 15 years, still retains its original structure dating back to 1959.
La Caravella also boasts a private collection of works belonging to the Amalfi Coast’s most celebrated artists that make this restaurant unique and magical.
Last but not least, the Cantina delle Rarità, located a few steps from the restaurant, which stores thousands of bottles inside an old galley built stone by stone with materials salvaged from the beach around the 17th century and recognized by industry insiders as among the first in Italy.
The interior houses La Caravella Art Gallery which, thanks to its patient search for valuable, unique works by local artists, has received recognition from art historian and critic Enzo Biffi Gentile, such as, “La Caravella is the external Hall of Honor of Vietri sul Mare ceramics.”
