Tour description

From the Middle Ages until the second half of the last century, Via Maestra dei Villaggi was the main connecting road between the urban centre of Amalfi and the hamlets to the west, as far as Agerola. The route cuts diagonally across the coast, touching, according to a gradually ascending profile, the villages of Pastena, Lone, Vettica, Tovere and other more distant and inland locations.

The suggested route goes through the villages of Pastena and Lone with a detour leading to the village of Pogerola. Unfortunately, due to an interruption, the Vettica – Tovere section is temporarily disrupted.

Via Maestra dei Villaggi is a journey through fragrant lemon gardens, picturesque terraces overlooking the sea, churches and tiled bell towers. Along the route, the landscape is enriched by plastered rustic houses of medieval origin, characterised by loggias supported by round arches, with barrel or pavilion vaults. The lemon terraces supported by dry stone walls, created through the hard work of several generations, represent the perfect combination of nature and human art.

Their historical importance, the panorama and the pretty churches along the route among the many vaulted houses make it a true cultural asset.

Once in the village of Pogerola, a visit to the historic center and its churches is suggested. For more on what to visit in Pogerola click here.

Returning to Amalfi via the downhill stairs of Via Nuova provides a 2km nature trail that takes about 30 minutes to reach the town center. To see the route map click here.
