Byzantine New Year 2024

31 August - 17:30 - 2 September - 23:59

SATURDAY, AUGUST 31, 2024. The events will be inaugurated by a public interview with Magister Franco Nuschese, during which the entrepreneur, among the most influential Italians in the States, will tell the townspeople about his life: from his youth lived in Minori, to the detachment from the perfect places of his childhood far from which he built his fortunes. Nuschese, in fact, has lived in Washington for more than 30 years, where in 1992 he founded Cafe Milano, a fine establishment in the Georgetown neighborhood frequented by U.S. presidents, movie stars and international politicians.

The interview will be held at 8:30 p.m. in the parlor at Largo Duca Piccolomini in Amalfi and will be preceded at 8 p.m. by a historical introduction by the event’s creators, Prof. Giovanni Camelia and Prof. Giuseppe Gargano.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2024. The Historical Procession of the Ancient Maritime Republic will be opened by the performance of the “Sbandieratori e Musici città Regia” (Flag-wavers and Musicians of the Royal City) at 6:15 p.m. in Piazza Duomo in Amalfi. At 6:30 p.m., the procession departs from the Cathedral of St. Andrew to reach the Church of San Salvatore de’ Birecto in Atrani where the investiture ceremony of the Magister of Amalfi Civilization in the presence of the Archbishop will take place, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inspired by the fascinating medieval rite of the coronation of the Dukes of Amalfi

At the end of the ceremony, the procession will turn from Atrani toward Amalfi to line up at 9 p.m., in all its grandeur on the monumental staircase of St. Andrew’s Cathedral, where the Magister of Civiltà Amalfitana’s greeting to the citizens will take place. This will be followed from 9:15 p.m. by the impressive fire show along the monumental staircase of the cathedral by performers from the Belgian company Pyronix.

MONDAY, SEPT. 2, 2024. The grand finale is in music, an elegant evening with the extraordinary participation of Arisa in Amalfi’s Piazza Duomo, scheduled at 9:30 p.m. She will offer an unprecedented show made only of voice and piano for the occasion.
