Tour Description

The walk begins in Piazza dei Dogi whose name is linked to an ancient folk tradition that associates the Doges of the Maritime Republic with the large corner palace located on the southern side of the square.

In the Middle Ages, Doges’ Square was the district of blacksmiths, and in addition to their stores, as many as five churches overlooked it. Between the 1800s and 1900s the square was used as a “spreader” for drying pasta.

From Piazza dei Dogi we continue to the Vagliendola Ward, a Greek-Byzantine district where we can admire the Domus Vagliendola dating back to the late 11th century.

Rione Vagliendola is traversed by a road that, via Via Annunziatella and an urban gate, leads to Via Maestra dei Villaggi, the main artery connecting with the outer farmhouses.

Along the way there is a church dedicated to St. Nicholas of the Greeks with whom the cult of St. Blaise was also associated.

Past Via Annunziatella, which leads to the famous Capuchin Convent, now converted into a hotel facility, we take the famous Longfellow Walk dedicated to the American writer and poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who visited Italy in the late 19th century and was enchanted by the charm of the Ancient Maritime Republic of Amalfi.

From here, take the steps of the Pineta Park that lead to the Lungomare dei Cavalieri in the direction of Piazza Duomo passing by theArsenal of the Republic, a symbolic monument of the Ancient Maritime Republic of Amalfi and home to the Museum of the Compass and the Maritime Duchy.

Arriving in Cathedral Square, one can admire the beauty and majesty of St. Andrew’s Cathedral.
