The Church of S. Pietro Apostolo in Tovere was built by the De Marino family probably around the mid-13th century. The church is divided into three naves covered by cross vaulted ceilings. An important feature of the building is the large sacristy with central pillar that provides support to four cross-vaults on the ceiling. There are niches here with stucco decorations of woven bands. However, the most interesting work in this environment is the large Giotto-school fresco of St Peter sitting on his Papal throne with Saints Nicola and Girolamo.
The bell tower, with a quadrilateral layout, has three floors and a tambour, with single-lancet windows on the sides, and a spire branching off from them.
The church has very ancient origins, with the first records dating back to 1272. In the past, the church housed a wooden crucifix from the 14th century, which was later stolen in 1977. In its place, a crucifix was built in the 1980s in the town of Ortisei in Trentino Alto Adige.
The church also houses the burial stones with bas-relief decoration of Leonardo de Fusco, who died in 1453; and of Vincenzo Vetticano, who died in 1537; a third slab has the church’s medieval herald of engraved on it, with the keys of St Peter below the Anjou coat of arms.
