This square is commonly known as Largo Piccolomini, because it is bordered to the east by a palace that was home to the Aragonese Piccolomini family – noble feudal lords of Amalfi – since the 15th century.
The square is also known as Largo Lastricato, from astracum, because of the stone and mortar paving that covers the Arsenali underneath it. On the northern side of the square, stands the small chapel of the Madonna delle Grazie, dating back to the 16th century.
