Housed within the Ancient Arsenal of the Republic of Amalfi is the extremely valuable Compass and Maritime Duchy Museum. The museum was established in 2010 and also brings together the collection of what was once the Amalfi Civic Museum. Inside the striking Arsenal of Amalfi a very special exhibit is being developed, documenting and honoring Amalfi’s thousand-year history from Roman times to the present. In addition to historical evidence of the splendor of the Maritime Republic’s past, later to become the Duchy of Amalfi, the museum pays homage to the grandeur of the Amalfi civilization in Italian and world history, having acted as a conduit not only for trade but also for culture between the Byzantine East, the Islamic East and the Christian West. The museum contains several collections from different eras: Roman and medieval artifacts, ancient scrolls, codices and manuscripts, ancient coins, nautical instruments, and works of art.
